Productivity is something with which many of us struggle. Particularly with all the distractions that technology offers, it can feel challenging to get on the ball and get things done. When you’re running a business, however, this task can seem even more insurmountable. How do you motivate a group of people to be their most productive? Here are 5 straightforward ideas you can implement in your workplace to increase the overall level of employee productivity.

1. Promote an open office environment.

This applies both physically and relationally. Many studies have shown that cubicles and private offices don’t always cut it anymore. Open office spaces or communal areas are shown to generate happier, more satisfied employees. As an added bonus, this continual engagement boosts creativity and allows everyone to feel more like they are part of a hard-working team. As far as relationships go, as a manager or owner you should allow yourself to be highly accessible to employees. An open door policy is a nice idea, or even better, join your staff in the new open workspace.

2. Help employees feel a part of the larger picture.

Every successful business is built by the work of its devoted employees, but what happens if those employees aren’t so devoted? Organisations that thrive do so because everyone involved feels personally integral to the process. When each employee fully understands what their company is doing and what their goals are, a sense of collaboration is born. Not only should your team know what your business aims and values are, but each individual should know how important they are and see how the role they play makes a difference. This can result in amazing improvements in productivity.

3. Acknowledge and reward innovation and creativity.

Those whose work is appreciated are those who feel valued. This, in turn, engenders a sense of happiness and meaning. To let your employees know their work makes a difference, incentives and awards are a fantastic tool. Prizes are certainly a motivator, but recognition of any kind will be welcomed. Many businesses host contests which employees can participate in, whether individually or in teams. Doing so fosters team spirit, creativity, and excitement, all factors which contribute to excellent productivity.

4. Provide opportunities for training.

Employees who are bored and unfulfilled in their work are likely to be unproductive, as are those who feel their skills aren’t up to the task at hand. To ensure all employees feel confident in their abilities and knowledge, it’s a great idea to provide frequent opportunities for training. Whether you host seminars or training sessions in the workplace itself or pay for employees to attend courses elsewhere, make sure your attitude shows that skills development is highly encouraged. Providing and promoting such events also allows employees the chance to expand their areas of expertise, an excellent way to get them fired up about their work.

5. Let time be (somewhat) fluid.

Not everyone does their best work between the hours of 9 and 5. Allowing for some flexibility in working hours is a prime way to show your employees that you trust them. More and more businesses are adopting a range of working hours, keeping the office open from 6am to 8pm, for instance, and allowing employees to work their hours when it suits them. Such freedom can be liberating and can help you get the best out of your team. And the ability to have control over their own schedules makes people much happier and therefore, more productive.
